Mechanical asparagus harvesting: FAQ and what have we learned in practice? ?

After another asparagus season, one thing is clear: mechanical harvesting is not simply about replacing hand harvesting. It is about using the machine strategically to make harvesting more efficient, predictable and manageable.

Our customers use the Non-selective harvesters in different ways: some harvest mechanically throughout the season, while others combine it with hand harvesting or use the machine several times to clean up the asparagus bed.

And what do they experience in practice?

✅ Better asparagus quality – straighter spears and less rust
✅ More efficient hand harvesting after the machine has passed
✅ Better control of peak production
✅ Less dependency on seasonal labour
✅ Lower harvesting costs
✅ More peace of mind during the season

One of the questions we often hear is: “Does non-selective harvesting mean a lot of short asparagus?”

During the first pass, the percentage of shorter spears can be higher. But experience makes a big difference. Choosing the right harvesting moment, suitable varieties, longer rows and the right field layout all help to optimise the results.

Another common question: “How often do you drive through the field?”

For 100% mechanical harvesting, approximately 6–7 passes per season is typical, depending on variety and weather conditions. When Chris is mainly used to clean up the bed and improve subsequent hand harvesting and quality of the asparagus, 1–3 passes can already make a significant difference.

Perhaps the strongest feedback from experienced users says it all:

“Without it, it is no longer possible.”

Mechanical harvesting is not one fixed method. It is a tool that can be adapted to your crop, labour situation and harvesting strategy.
